UPR and the mid-term assessment The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) through which a periodic review of human rights records of all UN Member States is carried out. It is based on objective and reliable information as well as interactive dialogue regarding the fulfilment by each member state of its human rights obligations and commitments. The UPR is important as it can serve as a balance in assessing and developing the human rights situation in a country which can lead to an improving of the relationship between the government and civil society in order to strengthen their cooperation and stronger commitment. Bahrain’s last UPR was in May 2017 and the follow up mid-term assessment is ongoing and due to report in November 2019. Bahrain’s next review is in May 2022.
