The Bahrain Forum for Human Rights (BFHR) issued a special report on the trial of the former MP of the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Bloc, Sheikh Hassan Isa, entitled "Trial of Conscience Under the Pretext of Terrorism". The report says that Sheikh Hassan Isa was sentenced to ten years in prison because of his religious, political and social activities, pointing out that he has spent more than 700 days in solitary confinement (isolation) until this moment. The BFHR’s report stated that the most prominent violations against Sheikh Hassan Isa are: enforced disappearance for 16 days, being deprived of contacting his family and his lawyer until after the completion of the investigation of the Public Prosecution, being subjected to moral coercion and threatening in case he did not admit being guilty of the charges brought against him in the Criminal Investigations Directorate Building, disclosure of bank accounts without the permission of the Public Prosecution, inspection of his mobile phone without his consent and without the permission of the Public Prosecution, being prevented from praying and bathing (for 11 days), being arrested without permission from the Public Prosecution, and being subjected to an unfair trial based on confessions that were extracted under torture. The report pointed out that: “The proceedings of the trial show that the Public Prosecution and the Court committee violated a number of rights and freedoms guaranteed by the international law and the Bahraini law, which resulted in a lack of the standards of fair trials in the trial of Sheikh Hassan Isa and the rest of the defendants. Also, there are no grounds for the detention, which makes his arrest an arbitrary arrest and a violation of the right to liberty.”
The report added: “According to the presented facts, namely the lack of material evidence, it was clear that the Fourth High Criminal Court, which issued its preliminary judgment, lacks the principles of independence and impartiality.”
The report consists of the following topics: the biography of Sheikh Hassan Isa, the background of the arrest, the malicious lawsuit and arbitrary detention, the proceedings of the trial sessions, violating the guarantees of fair trial standards, the conclusions and recommendations, in addition to the infographic and the appendix, which included a copy of the sentence issued against Sheikh Hassan Isa. |
