Ghina Al-Rebai, a BFHR researcher, made an oral comment at the OHCHR meeting held with human rights organizations on the Zoom application to present the 2019 United Nations annual report on human rights, on June 5, 2020. Al-Rebai called for the release of all prisoners of conscience Ghina Al-Rebai pointed out that subjecting prisoners of conscience to alternative penalties in Bahrain lacks respect for human rights. She stressed on the inherent right of prisoners of conscience to freedom unconditionally, with reparations, compensations, abolishment of their sentences, and holding those involved in committing violations against them accountable. Ghina Al-Rebai pointed out the deteriorating prison conditions in Bahrain, that are not compatible with the standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners, especially due to overcrowding since the number of prisoners exceeds the capacity of prisons, which foreshadows a catastrophe if COVID-19 reached prisons. It is worth noting that the OHCHR launched the 2019 UN annual report on human rights on June 5, 2020 noon at 2:00 Geneva time, in a meeting on Zoom, to which human rights organizations from various countries of the world were invited. |
