Bahrain Forum for Human Rights: Stripping 72 citizens of their nationalities is a calamity of basic rights of citizenship and a moral execution
Bahrain Forum for Human Rights demanded that the Bahraini government be prosecuted for: Stripping 72 citizens of their nationalities, which is considered a calamity of basic rights of citizenship and a moral execution.
Bahrain Forum for Human Rights said that stripping 72 Bahraini citizens of their nationalities is a calamity of basic rights of citizenship and the right to a nationality. The forum considered this action as a moral execution of these citizens. The forum also called for keeping the right to a nationality far from the political game, noting that these arbitrary measures have left 121 citizens stripped of their nationalities. The forum stressed that it will address the five members in the Security Council and the members of the Human Rights Council.
The forum also pointed out that Bahraini government's continual use of this measure as a means to punish dissent and political activists is considered a breach of international laws and a clear violation of article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stipulating that “no one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality”, and article 16 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights concerning the recognition of the legal personality of citizens.
Bahrain Forum for Human Rights clarified that the wording of the decision and its content contradict with the principles of the constitution, for the recent amendments on the citizenship law were ambiguous and unclear, which the authorities described as the duty of loyalty and harming of the Kingdom’s interests. The forum called on those who were stripped of their citizenship in Bahrain and abroad to prosecute the Bahraini government in local and international courts and called on the UN and High Commissioner for Human Rights to interfere immediately in order to put an end to this disaster and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.
