6.3.2023 Joint Statement by 127 Human Rights Organizations Over the Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference Calling on participants to work on stopping all forms of repression and political persecution in Bahrain. To Download the statement click here The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will hold its 146th Assembly in the Kingdom of Bahrain between 11 - 15 March 2023. A large number of parliamentarians and international observers from 179 countries are expected to participate. On this occasion, the undersigned human rights organizations express their deep concern about the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Bahrain, in light of an environment that restricts public freedoms, while there are ongoing arrests, torture crimes, death sentences, ill-treatment, unfair trials, absence of press freedoms, and poor prison conditions, in addition to the dissolution of opposition political societies and the confiscation of political rights by the authorities. In fact, Human rights defenders, including human rights activist Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, former president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, and opposition leaders, including Sheikh Ali Salman, Secretary-General of the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, are still imprisoned. The undersigned human rights organizations call on the participants of this conference to shed light on the human rights issues in Bahrain and work to stop all forms of political repression and persecution, abolish the Political Isolation Law in particular, death sentences, and the Nationality law, and stop other gross violations. In addition, the organizations call on the participants to demand releasing all prisoners of conscience unconditionally and providing reparations, achieving transitional justice, stopping unfair trials, emphasizing the principle of freedom of opinion and expression, restoring nationalities, and not targeting dissidents, including former MPs.
